Is a cushion cut diamond cheaper than a round?
Usually, at the same grade and weight. At one carat a natural G VS1 cushion starts at $1,000 here against $1,475 for a natural round, and across all grades the one carat medians are $1,985 for cushions and $2,834 for rounds. Part of the saving is given back in size, because a cushion faces up about half a millimeter smaller than a round of the same weight, so compare the millimeters, not just the carats, on the product pages.
What is the best ratio for a cushion cut diamond?
It depends on the look you want, and both ends of the range are well stocked. Square cushions (1.00 to 1.04) suit halo and vintage settings and are 10,317 of the natural cushions here; elongated cushions (1.15 and up) cover more of the finger and are 9,709 of them. Between 1.05 and 1.14 the stone reads square from a distance and slightly soft up close, which many people prefer in a solitaire. The exact ratio is on every product page, and the tables above show what each outline costs today.
What is the difference between chunky and crushed ice cushions?
A chunky (or antique) cushion has fewer, larger pavilion facets, so it flashes in big distinct bursts, much like a round brilliant; a crushed ice cushion has many small facets that glitter continuously and can look like a radiant. Crushed ice hides inclusions and color slightly better but can look glassy in dim light; chunky cushions show more contrast. Grading reports do not distinguish them, and there is no price difference on paper, so watch the 360 video: the facet pattern is obvious within the first rotation.
What color should a cushion cut diamond be?
One grade higher than you would choose for a round, because a cushion holds body color. For a natural cushion in white metal, G is the comfortable floor and H is fine in yellow or rose gold; in one carat natural cushions with VS2 clarity, G starts at $890, H at $860 and I at $815. Lab cushions solve the question for you: 8,591 of the one carat lab cushions on the color ladder are D color, starting at $450, so there is no reason to go warmer than F.
Do cushion cut diamonds have GIA reports?
Most natural cushions at Rare Carat do: 27,188 of the 27,837 carry GIA reports and 649 carry IGI reports. Lab grown cushions are graded mostly by IGI (80,642 of 86,357), with GIA and GCAL making up the rest. GIA does not assign a cut grade to cushions, so the report covers color, clarity, weight and measurements; the video and the AI quality score cover how the stone performs. Once you order, the inscription is matched to its report under a microscope by our New York staff.
Can I finance a cushion cut diamond?
Yes. At checkout, Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal Pay Later and Katapult show their terms before you commit, so a $1,985 natural cushion or a $619 lab one can be paid monthly. Financing leaves everything else in place: free insured shipping, free returns for 30 days, free resizing for the first year and a lifetime manufacturing warranty on the setting.
