What is the difference between an asscher and an emerald cut?
Both are step cuts with cropped corners; the asscher is square (ratio 1.00 to 1.04) with larger cropped corners and more concentric facets, which produce the windmill pattern when you look into the table, while the emerald cut is rectangular with a longer, calmer hall of mirrors look. Asschers face up smaller for the weight because they are cut deeper. On price they sit close together at the same grade: a one carat natural asscher has a median of $2,046 here against $2,028 for a natural emerald cut.
What clarity should an asscher cut diamond be?
VS1 or better for a natural stone, because the open step facets and the windmill pattern lead the eye straight to the center of the table. VS2 works when the 360 video shows the inclusion off in a corner. In one carat natural asschers with G to H color, VS1 starts at $1,055 and VS2 at $925. Lab grown asschers make the rule inexpensive: VVS2 among D to F lab asschers starts at $540.
Why does an asscher look smaller than a round of the same carat?
Because it is cut deep. A one carat asscher is about 5.5 mm square while a one carat round is about 6.5 mm across, and the square outline also has less visual spread than a circle of similar width. Buyers who want the asscher look at round size usually go up a quarter to a half carat, which in lab grown costs very little. Every product page lists the exact length, width and depth, and the video shows the stone against a ring size reference.
What color should an asscher be?
G or better in platinum or white gold, H in yellow gold. The step facets reflect body color across the whole stone rather than breaking it up. In one carat natural asschers with VS2 clarity, G starts at $1,065, H at $925 and I at $870. Lab asschers are nearly all D to F, so color is not a decision there; spend on clarity and cut precision instead.
Are asscher cut diamonds GIA graded?
Most natural asschers at Rare Carat are: 8,761 of the 8,987 carry GIA reports and 226 carry IGI reports. Lab asschers are graded mostly by IGI (23,600 of 24,591), with GIA and GCAL making up the rest. No laboratory grades cut on an asscher, so symmetry is judged from the video and the measurements. Every report number is laser inscribed on the girdle, and our New York staff match it to the report under a microscope once you order.
Can I finance an asscher cut diamond?
Yes. Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal Pay Later and Katapult are available at checkout and show their terms before you commit, so a $2,046 natural one carat asscher or a $643 lab one can be paid monthly. Either way you keep free insured shipping, free 30 day returns, free resizing in the first year and the lifetime manufacturing warranty on the setting.
